Following International Women’s Day last Saturday, we sat down with Darshini to reflect on the women who inspire her, her journey into legal communications, and what excites her most about the future of the industry.

Who are the women that have influenced or inspired you the most in your career?

My close female friendships have been a constant source of support throughout my life. The women at Byfield have been incredible mentors and role models- having joined straight from university, I’ve learned everything I know about the sector and so much more from them. They inspire me every single day.  I’m also incredibly inspired by the amazing women at CM Murray. Working closely with their partners, I learn more and more about the industry from them.

What aspect of your role or the projects ahead are you most excited about?

I look forward to working on more litigation and crisis communication projects in the future to hone my strategic thinking skills and deepen my understanding of how media can be leveraged to benefit my clients. I thrive in the fast-paced nature of my job and I look forward to doing more and more high-stakes work.

What inspired you to pursue a career in legal communications?

I studied political science and public policy, I’d always been drawn to current affairs and the fast-moving nature of the news cycle. I wanted a job that kept me engaged, challenged, and one where I was constantly learning- legal communications turned out to be the perfect fit. Every day is different, and safe to say, I’ve become a proper newshound!

What advice would you give to young women looking to enter the legal or communications industry?

The sector definitely needs more diverse voices, particularly from women of colour!

Legal communications can be a niche sector but it is incredibly dynamic, if you thrive in a fast-paced environment where you don’t want any two days to be the same, this could be the perfect career for you. And beyond the work, the people truly make this industry special.

Describe your career journey in three words.

Unpredictable, ever-evolving, and challenging.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

This is a tough one! But one thing people might not know is that I have a serious obsession with fashion—I am usually out hunting for the perfect vintage bag or watch.
